4.4 Granny

Granny is a granular synthesizer. Instead of playing an audio sample normally from start to finish, it chops the audio into microscopic slivers called "grains" and scrambles them together. This is excellent for creating evolving, glitchy textures and weird cinematic pads. Drop any audio sample into the waveform view window to process it with Granny.

Parameters & Modulations Tabs: Granny has a built-in LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) that can automatically move certain knobs. Any parameter text written in green (Position, Formant, Freq) can be modulated. Clicking the Modulations tab allows you to set exactly how much the LFO pushes those green parameters around.

  • Sample Selector: A menu displaying name of the base audio file you want to scramble.
  • Position: Changes what part of the audio sample Granny is currently slicing grains from.
  • Offset: Spreads the grains out, creating a wider, more smeared sound.
  • Speed: Controls how fast the grains are played back.
  • Octave / Coarse / Fine: Tunes the overall granular sound up or down.
  • Formant: Changes the physical "throat" or character of the sound without actually changing the musical pitch.
  • Fixed: A toggle button. When active, the pitch of the sample is locked. Playing higher or lower keys on your MIDI keyboard will not change the pitch of the sound.
  • Filter (A, D, S, R, Freq, Reso): Contains Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release knobs to shape how the filter brightness moves over time, alongside standard Frequency (Cutoff) and Resonance knobs.
  • Amp (A, D, S, R, Volume): Contains Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release knobs to shape the volume envelope of the sound, alongside a master Volume knob.
